After playing Dragon Quest Monsters 2 - Taras Quest for quite a bit, i decided to go back to the series roots. So i grabed a copy of Dragon Warrior I+II for the Gameboy Color. In this post i will only talk about the first game, as i didnt really play Dragon Warrior II yet. The Gameboy Color version is a remake of the original Nes games which where published 1986 and 1987.
I have to say, i have avoided this series for far too long. I played this game the first time in my life and i really think this game is a better JRPG than many many modern games I know. You play as a silent hero who has to save the kingdom from a evil lord called "DracoLord". The difference to almost all other JRPGs I know is that you controll only this one hero. You dont get any other group members who join you on your quest. With that comes the fact, that you only battle one monster at a time as well. The battle system is pretty simple. All you get is a basic attack, a firespell a healing and a sleep spell and the option to flee. Thats pretty much it. But even though the system is simple, battles dont get boring or anoying.
The strongest part of the game is the puzzle exploring though. The game doesnt tell you where to go exactly. You get hints from time to time from people you first have to find in different towns, caves or castles. You have to discover the story and the next goal for yourself. A mechanic which is not really known anymore in modern RPGs, who tend to be text heavy and directive.I was really blown away how fun a simple RPG can be. This game really showed me how players can be envolved in a game n a different and unique way. So far I can say, that every Dragon Warrior/Quest game i played was super fun to play and im really looking forward to play the other titles a bit more. But first i have to finish this game.
On a side note. I actually didnt play that game alone, but got togehter with Inko. We where playing it together in the same room, which added a lot more to the game. Its super fun to explore and collect hints togehter.
